What a hike to Cho-Cho-Choose!

Enjoy an easy trek on a beautiful section of the Confederation Trail, which once housed the old railway tracks from one historic train station in Summerside to another in Kensington.

The hike begins in Summerside, the City By the Sea, and takes you around many rich red potato fields before ending in Kensington, the heart of PEI. The flat terrain provides relatively easy walking conditions.

You will start the day off right with breakfast at a Summerside favourite, Evermoore Brewing Company, on Water Street. Parking is behind the Loyalist Country Inn and some limited parking at Evermoore. Your hearty breakfast includes a breakfast sandwich, coffee and tea from Samuel’s Coffee House, cinnamon rolls from the Water Street Bakery, homemade granola, yogurt with honey and fresh fruit from Chef Bala at Iron and Salt. All this while listening to PEI’s own Singing Strings.

Have you always wanted to be marched in? The College of Piping will take you to your midway break including a comfort station, a wonderful fruit and nut square from Jane and Sue’s Chocolates and fuel from Riverdale Orchard Cidery. These wonderful folks will have their aptly named 2 Scots on the Trail Cider for tasting along with Scottish Highlander Biscuits, a melt-in-your-mouth shortbread. Ann Cakes and Café will prepare three flavours of bubble tea as well. With these treats, you should be good to go!

Your hike ends with lunch provided by some of Kensington and the area’s finest providers. Ship to Shore is preparing Bil’s Buddha Bowl with mixed greens, roasted chickpeas, veggies, quinoa, with maple vinaigrette. The wonderful Willow Bakery and Café will provide a fall note with a butternut squash soup. Chef Robert will have his Pendergast Country Bread simply toasted with his famous smoked salmon spread or mushroom tartine. And of course, if a Pendergast is present, you have Green Gables oysters to enjoy as well. Evermoore Brewing Company will have samples of their craft beer for you. A scoop or two of Holman’s homemade ice cream will round out this delicious meal!

All of this while listening to the award-winning, acclaimed PEI-based singer-songwriter Dylan Menzie.

Alas, this adventure will be over, and we will bus you back to Summerside.

This Island Food Hike is a perfect combination of land and sea, along with a few other fun elements that are deeply rooted in the culture of the area.
