We don’t know where the years went, but here we are in 2023 celebrating the 15th anniversary of the PEI Fall Flavours Food & Drink Festival presented by Sobeys. Indeed, time flies when you’re having fun and great food! It’s been an incredible journey from its humble beginnings in Charlottetown to an Island-wide festival garnering international acclaim. As we say ‘cheers’ to 15 years, we’re excited to introduce a slate of brand new events AND bring back some of the Festival’s most beloved events. Here’s your handy guide to all of the returning festival favourites that will be bringing their A-game back to this year’s culinary extravaganza:

Farm Day in the City – October 1
PEI’s biggest farmers’ market of the year returns to downtown Charlottetown on October 1st. This magical celebration of PEI’s farmers, food producers and artisans has been an integral part of the PEI Fall Flavours Food & Drink Festival since its very inception. Over the years, Farm Day in the City has grown tremendously. In recent years, this free and family-friendly day of fun has featured 200+ vendors, multiple stages with live music, kids’ activities, a petting farm, friendly competitions, a beer garden and more! Come, discover what this year’s Farm Day has in store and take the opportunity to ‘buy local’!

Street Feast – October 6-7
Making its return to the streets of downtown Charlottetown on Oct 6th & 7th, Street Feast has earned a reputation for bringing high-octane vibes, a diverse line-up of entertainment and scrumptious street eats to PEI’s capital. Get yourself to Kent Street for all the fun, including food and drink from local restos, live music, drag shows, party games, live painting, tarot card readings, dance performances, and more.

PEI Lobster Party – October 5
There is arguably nothing more quintessential ‘PEI’ than a lobster party! Snag your tickets early because this cracking event always sells out fast. And it’s no wonder it’s so popular, the PEI Lobster Party is a shellfish lovers’ dream come true! A team of chefs, led by the talented and creative Chef Jesse MacDonald will be serving up fresh PEI oysters, an array of PEI lobster dishes, craft beer, and other local delicacies. In true PEI party style, the evening will also feature live music and you’ll even have the chance to mingle with local lobster fishers.

A Taste of Georgetown – October 3

‘Dinner and a show’ gets a fresh twist at this longstanding Festival event, which takes in the heart of Eastern PEI. Enjoy a feast of locally-inspired culinary creations prepared by a team of talented chefs, while you sip on a signature cocktail. Then it’s time to settle in for an entertaining theatrical performance at the historic King’s Playhouse. This popular event truly serves up an authentic taste of Georgetown – be prepared to fall in love with this charming village and its genuine people!

Chef’s Island – October 7
Chef’s Island is back again with a line-up of chef talents ready to wow your taste buds with small plates of culinary bliss. Hosted by the Culinary Federation of PEI, this always-popular evening of food and fun is your opportunity to see the Island’s best talents strut their stuff. There will be duels (not as dangerous as it may sound) with commentary by comedian Patrick Ledwell and the chance to cast your vote for best chef, too!

3rd Annual Sip N’ Slurp – October 7
Back for its 3rd year, Sip N’ Slurp delivers on its promise of a laid-back evening filled with great food, delightful drinks, foot-stompin music, and good company! Head ‘up West’ to Tyne Valley and get ready to slurp PEI oysters, sip craft beers and ciders, and soak up the raucous party vibes that pair perfectly with the food and drink.

Megapaji: Experience Lennox Island – October 8
Megapaji made its Festival debut in 2022 and won over the hearts and taste buds of everyone that attended. This one-of-a-kind event invites guests to connect with Epektwik’s rich Indigenous culture and enduring community on Lennox Island. Set against the backdrop of Malpeque Bay’s shimmering waters, you can look forward to an afternoon of locally-sourced dishes prepared over open fire, cherished Indigenous traditions, and genuine connections with Indigenous artisans from the region. It’s an experience you’ll remember long after you’ve made your way home.

And there you have it, a round-up of all the Festival events that have become perennial favourites and are bound to knock it out of the park again this year!

And just like that, the 2022 PEI Fall Flavours Festival presented by Sobeys is a wrap. To say it was an extraordinary month of celebrating on Canada’s Food Island would be an understatement.

Every year, the Festival serves up unforgettable moments and magic, but this year was extra special. This was the year we came together again after 2+ years of pandemic pivots and adaptations. Although the Festival’s schedule was reduced by Hurricane Fiona crashing the party, she didn’t dampen our spirits, and we still welcomed over 6,400 Festival go-ers to experience the people, places and products that make the PEI Fall Flavours Festival so special.

It was a reunion of the best kind. We welcomed guests from near and far. We reconnected with our favourite chefs and invited new ones to join the party. And, of course, we served up the very best ingredients from our PEI farmers and fishers for each and every feast of the Festival. Lobsters, mussels, oysters, beef, and potatoes were the superstars of the Festival!

We hope you were able to join us for this wildly delicious month-long culinary celebration, but whether you were there in person or simply in spirit, we’re pretty sure you’ll savour this recap of the Festival. Keep reading for the highlights reel!

Kicking Off the Festival with a Cookbook Launch Party!

ICYMI, our brand new Canada’s Food Island cookbook came back from the printers just in time for us to host a launch party in tandem with the PEI Fall Flavours Festival Presented by Sobeys.

This upscale soiree took place at The Carriage House in New London on a gorgeous, sun-filled evening in early September. Guests enjoyed a roving reception showcasing recipes from the cookbook prepared by some of PEI’s most talented chefs and food folx, including guest host Chef Michael Smith. Live music, campfires, mingling, and storytelling rounded out the experience. And, of course, everyone left with a stunning hardcover copy of the Canada’s Food Island Cookbook. It was a beautiful way to kick off the Festival and a celebration of the collaboration and passion that brought this cookbook from dream into stunning reality.

Shellebrating 25 Years!

This year marked the jubilant return of the PEI International Shellfish Festival after a two-year hiatus AND its 25th anniversary. Suffice to say, the party vibes in the ‘big white tent’ were high-octane the whole weekend long – from the Feast & Frolic kick-off on Thursday to the intense finale of the Garland Canada International Chef Challenge on Sunday afternoon, and every moment in between (especially the kitchen parties Friday and Saturday night!). As always, the Festival put the spotlight on the VIPS that make it possible for us to enjoy PEI shellfish all year round – the fishers that harvest PEI lobster, oysters, mussels, clams, quahogs and other shellfish.

The Return of Fan Favourites

This year’s Festival saw the return of several events that have proven time and time again to win over guests. From the food and wine pairings of An Evening at Red Shores to the charm of Savour Victoria, the showcase of talent at Chef’s Island, and the Acadien spirit of Le Festin and Clammin’ & Jammin’, the success of our returning events is proof that our guests know a good thing when they eat it.

A special shout-out to our friends at Discover Charlottetown and our industry partners, who were intent on bringing feel-good vibes to the capital city despite Hurricane Fiona. And they did just that, hosting Street Feast two weeks later than originally scheduled and Farm Day in the City in mid-October. Beautiful weather and happiness permeated both events, as Islanders and visitors came together to celebrate and support local!

Introducing the New Kids on the Block

We were incredibly excited to launch a number of new Signature Events at this year’s Festival.

Mejepaji: Experience Lennox Island marked the Festival’s first foray into celebrating the indigenous food and culture of the Mi’kmaq people of Epekwitk. This seaside afternoon feast featured an incredible array of dishes from the sea and land cooked in the tradition of the Mi’kmaq over open fire pits. A smudging ceremony and captivating performance (Mi’kmaq Legends) by Indigenous youth that combined dance, storytelling, drama and drumming made for a moving and unforgettable experience.

This year also marked the introduction of our very first All-Inclusive Culinary Weekend! Oysterilcious invited folx to go up west and experience the Canadian Oyster Coast. Lots of slurping and swooning ensued, as guests enjoyed our brand-new Oysterlicious Dinner and Oyster Deck Experience, the 2nd Annual Sip N’ Slurp, and much more.

The new kids on the block proved that you can’t go wrong when you combine incredible food with authentic culture and add passionate, talented chefs to the mix!

It’s All About Community

If the past 2+ years have taught us one universal truth, it’s that community is at the heart of everything. The PEI Fall Flavours Festival presented by Sobeys is an extraordinary celebration because an extraordinary community of farmers, fishers, beverage makers, food producers, chefs, tourism operators, event organizers, and other food folx come together to make each and every event unforgettable.

We’ve always known our Island community is incredibly special and unique. This year, however, our deeply rooted commitment to looking after each other and coming together was especially evident in the aftermath of Hurricane Fiona. We are thankful to all of the first responders, electric crews, front-line employees, and volunteers that worked tirelessly to take care of Islanders after the storm. We are also thankful to all of our partners in food and tourism for their incredible support as we worked together to determine the best way forward for the Festival’s remaining events, with safety remaining our top priority at all times. While the storm devastated our Island in many ways, it also served as yet another reminder that our Island community is resilient and strong.

And, of course, there’s YOU, our brilliant community of food-loving friends from near and far that choose to support the Festival again and again. We are ever-grateful to have you at the table. Thank you for the conviviality and your unbridled support, we look forward to seeing you in 2023!

There are SO many culinary events and adventures to choose from at the PEI Fall Flavours Festival presented by Sobeys. Let’s face it, you’re going to have to narrow down your options at some point. We’ve put together a ‘style guide’ to help you find the perfect FIT for you.

You Love Having Everything Planned For You

You’re the type that likes to sit, back, relax and let someone else do all the planning. An all-inclusive resort vacation is right up your alley. You love it when a restaurant offers a set chef’s menu. You don’t really understand people who love the planning part of a vacation. On the other hand, you’re not really into ‘flying by the seat of your pants’. You want to arrive at your vacation destination with full assurance that you’re going to have an incredible weekend filled with the best food, lots of fun, plenty of unique experiences, and the chance to make new friends along the way.

Elevate your PEI Flavours experience by taking in an all-inclusive culinary weekend:

By the Sea, Under the Harvest Moon in Eastern PEI (Sept 23 – 25)

Oysterlicious in Western PEI (Oct 7 – 9)

You’re the Life of the Party

You’re often the first one on the dance floor and may even have started a conga line or two in your time. You love when your food is paired with laughter, energetic vibes, live music and maybe a vino, craft beer or freshly-made cocktail. Your theme song may very well be ‘Let’s Get This Party Started’.

Find your party groove at:

The PEI International Shellfish Festival – September 15 to 18

Beef N’ Blues – September 23

Street Feast – September 23 and 24

Bites, Brews & Tune: Savour Victoria Afterglow – September 22

You Like to Get off the Beaten Path

While most people rely on a GPS to guide them to their next destination, you prefer to wing it without a map. For you, the journey IS the destination. When you hit up a new city, you like to find the hidden gems that only the locals know about, and when you’re in the countryside all roads are fair game, even the ones that are one narrow lane of red dirt!

You’ll love these Festival gems:

Taste of Georgetown – September 29

Sip N’ Slurp – October 8

Taste of North Rustico – October 1

Fam is Your Jam

There’s nothing that means more to you than spending time with the ones you love most. You might or might not drive a minivan, but either way you appreciate their practicality. You drive your kids nuts singing ‘We Are Family’ and they drive you nuts singing every single song from Frozen, but in the end, you wouldn’t want it any other way. They’re your home team after all.

Bring the whole gang to these family-friendly events and adventures:

Le Festin acadien avec homard – September 2

Farm Day in the City – October 2

Under the Spire Music Festival: Soup Fest 2022 – September 18

You’re Always Up for Making New Friends

A stranger is just a friend waiting to happen. You’ve been known to strike up conversations in grocery store lines (or even the DMV) and your friend list on Facebook is over 1,000. You’ve probably read ‘How to Win Friends and Influence People’. You’re in your happy place when making new friends or spending time with old friends. Breaking the ice at a gathering comes naturally to you.

Make new friends or catch up with old ones at:

Bites, Brews & Tunes: Savour Victoria Aftergloww – September 22

Farm to Fire to Table – October 1

Lobster Lovers – Multiple Dates

You Love a Good Drama

Whether it’s a Broadway show, a binge-worthy Netflix show, or an intense competition, you live for a bit of spectacle. You’re probably like wearing bold colours and statement pieces. It’s entirely likely that you’ve entered a karaoke contest before or you were the star of your high school’s musical. All the world’s a stage, as Shakespeare would say.

Get your fill of drama (the good kind) and dramatic flavours at:

Roma Gala Heritage Feast – September 11

Clammin and Jammin – September 16

Chef’s Island – October 8

You Live for Food. Really, Really Outstanding Food

OK, this one’s easy. Above all else (except *maybe* your spouse), your true love is food. Everyone comes to you for advice on which restaurants to eat at, which food festivals to check out (obviously you recommend The PEI Fall Flavours Festival presented by Sobeys), and which recipe books to buy. You are THE foodie in your friend circle, a title you’ve earned due to your formidable knowledge of the culinary world and/or your intense passion for all things food-related. In any case, it’s always the food that stokes your fire.

Discover your food bliss at:

Oysterlicious – October 7 – 9

Adventure is Your Middle Name

No matter what you’re doing, you like to get IN on the action, rather than stand on the sidelines. If you were at an improv comedy night and they asked for audience volunteers, you’d be the first to raise your hand. And suffice to say that you relish the idea of getting out of your comfort zone, from learning something brand new to trying tandem skydiving. You’d probably share Helen Keller’s famous quote “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all” on your Facebook page, but you’re too busy out adventuring!

Find your next adventure at:
